The History of the Jelly Belly Candy Company

The Jelly Belly Candy Company produces some of the most flavorful jelly beans with flavors ranging from buttered popcorn to cherry and everything in between. It's a company that was started in America in 1869, just two years after brothers Gustav and Albert Goelitz emigrated from the Harz Mountain region of Germany.

Reuniting with an uncle who had migrated five years prior, Gustav, age 24, set up an ice cream and candy store in Belleville, Illinois and Albert, age 21, took to a horse drawn wagon to sell their confections to surrounding communities.

The Goelitz brothers by no means invented jelly beans. These tiny jelly candies have been around since Biblical Times, known as "Turkish Delight", which originated in Instanbul, Turkey. The original jelly bean was a citrus, rose water and honey gel that had a firm outer coating and chewy center.

In the late 1800s Americans became infatuated with penny candy as candy makers began creating sugar candies. Inspired by Jordan Almonds, which was then known as "Confetti", "Turkish Delight" was recreated and shaped into a bean and coated with a soft shell using a process called "panning". This process originates back the 17th century France. Raw nuts or fruit were placed in a bowl filled with sugar and syrup, then by hand, the bowl was rocked back and forth until the nuts or fruit were coated with the syrup and sugar. Whose idea it was to modify and coat the "Turkish Delight" is unknown, though early advertising records attribute William Schraft, as he promoted sending the jelly beans to Civil War Union Soldiers.

Then one of America's worst economic depressions hit in 1893. Paper money was double the value of the gold backing it. The financial strain hit the Goelitz Brothers and they were forced to assign assets to creditors and sell the business. Albert continued selling candy for another company until his death at the age of 80. Gustav, however, never recovered, dying in 1901, just one week shy of his 56th birthday.

In 1898, the next generation of Goelitz, Gustav's son, Adolph with the help of his friend and neighbor, William Kelley, opened a candy shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. Edward Kelley, William's cousin, was hired in 1901 as the company's bookkeeper. Through his employement he met and fell in love with Goelitz's sister, Joanna. The two were married, formally joining the Goelitz and Kelley's into a family partnership.

The 1900s had America in love with chocolate. Then World War II entered and as chocolate was sent to overseas troops, creating a chocolate shortage, Americans migrated back to penny candies and jelly beans. It was one, if not the first, of confectionary items to be sold by weight as "bulk candy".

The country's candy manufacturer's employed an estimated 27,000 workers and the Goelitz Confectionery Company prospered. The arrival of 1912 had the company turning away orders due to the lack of production capacity.

Goelitz and Kelley found a factory along the north shores of Lake Michigan. Its location offered rail service and the land was affordable. They purchased the factory and moved the company to North Chicago. Income tax was introduced in 1913 and closed the doors of many mom-and-pop candy makers. Goelitz Confectionery Company was well established and survived, making primarily butter creams, which would later be known as mellocremes. Licorice, chocolate and peppermints were also manufactured, however, the mellocremes kept the company growing for the next five decades.

The best seller for the Goelitz Confectionery Company was candy corns. Origin shows the candy corn being invented during the 1880s, thought Goelitz Confectionery Company's don't show production of candy corn until 1900. Regardless of when they began manufacturing candy corns, the company created a reputation for the finest candy corn on the market.

Candy making was seasonal work, mainly March through Thanksgiving, employing 30 workers for the autumn candy production. Without air conditioning, the factory was hot as more than 50 batches of candy were created each day.

Employees worked six, ten hour days at a wage of $5.22 per week in 1900. The weekly salary rose to $11.18 per week by 1917.

Men, employed as "stringers", would walk backwards pouring "runners", hand-held buckets, each weighing 45 pounds, into trays of cornstarch imprinted with kernel-shaped molds. The candy corn production required three passes: one for orange, white and yellow colors.

Wooden buckets, tubs and cartons were used to pack customer orders. Using paste the workers made themselves, labels were placed on the packages and delivered by wagon to customers in the area. Railroad cars handled orders for customers of longer distances. Very long distances were not an option due to the products perishability.

The beginning of World War I found turmoil within the company. Gus Jr. left the business permanently and Herman migrated west to California and opened his own company, The Herman Goelitz Candy Co. Herman's company manufactured what Herman knew best, Candy Corn. He was too far from his family's business to be of competition.

Following the Great Depression, the third generation of the California and Illinois candy making companies saw other manufacturers creating candy corns and undercutting prices. It was hurting both businesses. William Kelley, based in Illinois and Herman Rowland, descendent of Gustav Goelitz, recognized that expansion was necessary if they were to survive. They needed to diversify the product or close their doors. The company, lead by 19 year old Herman Rowland, expanded adding Chocolate Dutch Mints, gummi bears, jelly beans and jells to production.

The Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, wrote his famous letter stating, "We can hardly start a meeting or make a decision without passing around the jar of jelly beans" in 1967.

Sugar prices soared in 1975 and candy business went out of business as buyers held back orders hoping to wait out the crisis. The Chicago plant was closed for a couple of months to buy time, while Herman, in California, borrowed heavily to buy sugar to continue production.

A driver for a candy distributor, David Klein, approached Herman Rowland and shared his childhood dream, to create "the Rolls Royce of jelly beans". The Goelitz candy makers, who had built a reputation for quality, crafted eight flavors of small, intensely flavored jelly beans in the summer of 1976. The company created a process that cooked the flavors into not only the shells, but the center of the jelly beans and used natural ingredients wherever possible. They spared no cost in using only the very best ingredients.

The Goeltiz's chose unusual flavors, never before made into jelly beans: Very Cherry, Lemon, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Root Beer, Grape and Licorice. They called these jelly beans, Jelly Bellys, a derivation from a rhyme with the 1920s blues singer, Leadbelly. The new flavors were sold individually, revolutionizing the mixed bags of jelly beans.

The Jelly Bellys were a sensation and Herman found himself in need of additional production to meet the demand. He called William Kelley in Illinois and the candy making family was reunited into a single company for the first time in 58 years.

During the 1980 Presidential Election, Jelly Belly entered the homes of America. Former Governor, Ronald Reagon, won the election and brought Jelly Belly into the White House. Reagan's passion for jelly beans introduced Blueberry Jelly Bellys, so he could serve red, white and blue jelly beans at inaugural parties. Production increased to round the clock and orders from current retailers were booked two years in advance of being able to ship.

Three tons of Jelly Bellys were served at the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. More than 10,000 Jelly Bellys were used to create a portrait of Ronald Reagan.

Jelly Belly was the first jelly bean in outer space. In 1983 as a presidential surprise fot eh astronauts, Jelly Bellys were sent on the space shuttle Challenger. It was also the flight of the first American female astronaut, Sally Ride.

Each Jelly Belly has just one calorie! This makes it a choice snack among dieters as the Jelly Bellys taste so much like the foods they are supposed to be that it feels like an indulgence eating caramel apple or buttered popcorn!

Today, the Jelly Belly Candy Company is the world's choice for gourmet jelly beans. They have fifty official flavors and countless other flavors from special to collections to wacky. Jelly Belly offers Movie Flavors which are popular. The Ant Bully offers the flavor, dirt. The best selling movie flavors, however, come from Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, featuring flavors like Ear Wax, Rotten Egg and Vomit.

Consumers love mixing different flavors of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans to create a new flavor. It's so much fun that the company has a link of recipes on its website and recipes can be found on each package of Jelly Bellys. The company still manufacturers candy corn, and more than 100 other candies, including gummis, sour candies and chocolates.

The Wonderful Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds!

As a child my mother and I had a tradition during the months of autumn: pumpkin carving! We would open them and scoop out their insides, being careful to save every seed. She would then lightly salt them, roast them in the oven and talk about how much healthier they were for me then all the candy I would soon be eating and the many benefits of pumpkin seeds. I never really considered them as more than a tasty snack, but there are plenty of benefits of pumpkin seeds, both roasted and raw.

Just one ounce of pumpkin seeds contain 333mg of phosphorous, which is a critical mineral to our bone formation and cell repair. Calcium isn't the only thing needed for strong bones. We also have to have phosphorus and too many calcium supplements can block the absorption of this vital mineral in our bodies. One of the benefits of pumpkin seeds is to balance out the overabundance of calcium so our body can function better.

Tired? The other benefit of the phosphorus is that it helps get rid of fatigue and weakness, helping us maintain proper brain functions. Phosphorous is the second most abundant mineral in our bodies and these seeds include a generous helping of this mineral.

Wondering what else pumpkin seeds can offer for nutrition? The 223mg of the electrolyte potassium found in them helps lower blood pressure, promotes quicker healing, helps with migraines and is a natural pain desensitizer. In researching pumpkin seed nutrition, I came across a mineral I had never heard of before: Manganese. This trace mineral is found in minute amounts in our pancreas, kidney, liver and bones. It helps regulate blood sugar and is crucial for nerve and brain function. A component of the antioxidant SOD, this mineral helps to fight free radicals. The damage to our DNA and cell membranes caused by free radicals can be prevented and even reduced by antioxidants. Having low levels of Manganese in our bodies can cause seizures, affect our fertility and contribute to fatigue. Manganese should only be taken as a supplement under the care of a medical professional but in this case, we can indulge ourselves with pumpkin seeds and reap the same benefits.

Manganese, phosphorous and calcium work with one another in our bodies and the big benefits of pumpkin seeds is that they contain all of these. More nutritional benefits are numerous vitamins including Vitamin C, B1 and Niacin and folate, the natural form of folic acid whichis needed by our bodies to produce red blood cells, help support brain function and is an integral component of our spinal fluid.

Roasted pumpkin seeds are extremely easy to make and can be made plain or with either butter or olive oil. They can be eaten in numerous ways, including raw or added to your favourite recipes for a new interesting twist. One innovative way to get the benefits of pumpkin seeds is to grind roasted seeds in the coffee grinder and add it to your favourite cereals, on white rice or even vegetables.

The benefits of these seeds are enormous and they are not limited to seasonal availability either. You can find them at your local market or even online from specialty sites. So go out and grow your own or pick some up and indulge in the multiple nutritional health benefits of pumpkin seeds!

Weight Loss Plans for Women Over 40 - Five Tips for Summer Weight Loss

Now that summer is here, the hot weather means a lot of bare-skin clothing styles. Unfortunately, if you didn't notice the little bit of excess weight over the winter, you're noticing it now! If you are a lady who is over 40 and seeking an effective weight loss plan for women over 40 to follow, you can drop the pounds and fat.

Summer is actually a great time to lose weight. Hot weather dampens the appetite, making summer a natural time to cut back on portions. Here are five easy tips to help you lose the unwanted pounds, look slimmer, and feel healthier.

Tip 1

Drink plenty of water. Not pop or soda, pure water. In the heat, your body craves extra liquids, so give it what it needs. Studies have shown that staying adequately hydrated keeps the body running optimally. Research has also shown that drinking water before a meal encourages you to eat less, making weight loss easier than ever. If you insist that plain water is unpleasant, add a bit of lime or lemon juice. Water helps the body excrete wastes, another way to ensure better health.

Tip 2

Visit the local farm market. This is the season for eating locally produced fresh fruits, vegetables, and experimenting with herbs for flavorings. Nothing tastes better on a hot night than some delicious strawberries and blueberries. Remember though, don't ruin it by adding a ton of sugar or whipped topping. If you must have a little something on the fruit, try some plain yogurt.

Tip 3

Stay completely away from processed foods. Buy fresh food at the grocery or farm market and prepare it at home. There are plenty of simple meals that take just minutes to prepare. The beauty of this is that you control every ingredient in your meals. There is no hidden fat, sugar or artificial ingredients. This helps you keep an accurate count of calories and boosts your health.

Tip 4

Add whole grains to your diet. Refined grains have all the fiber and nutrients removed. Don't be fooled by "enriched" products. You want the real thing, the whole, natural grain. The soluble fiber in whole grains and beans helps drop that belly fat. What a bonus!

Tip 5

Enjoy the outdoors. Get outside. Play some tennis, take a walk, or go swimming. You'll burn calories and lose the weight even faster.

As you can see, if you are looking for an easy weight loss plan for women over 40 to follow, these are simple steps anyone can use to transform to that incredible body they have been desiring!

Ten Healthy Ways to Lose Weight Fast-Without Even Dieting!

Have you ever walked down the street, into a restaurant, or practically anywhere public - and noticed that a large percentage people are either overweight or downright obese? Just 20 years ago the opposite was true. Sadly, unless you're one of the minority who is lean and fit - this type of landscape can create a setting where you simply want to give up on your own weight loss goals.

That said, there's always hope if you're willing to keep an open mind and make a few changes. In this article I'll share the top ten healthy ways to lose weight fast - whether you're following a diet or not!

Ten Healthy Ways to Lose Weight Fast!
Walk every day! Walking will help you set a positive intention. Plus you'll stay more motivated, by being connected to your environment. Try and reach 45 minutes each day, but even 10-15 minutes will help.
Add cayenne pepper and/or lemon to your water, and DRINK. Cayenne pepper and lemon (or lime) are both known to stimulate the metabolism and encourage weight loss. By sipping about 2 liters of water per day, you'll keep your metabolism running high, while flushing out fats.
Cut your portions down a bit by using smaller dishes. Trade out your dinner plates for a large salad plate, and you'll hardly notice your portions shrink. You can reduce your food intake at meals by 10-30% without hardly noticing.
Eat your 5 Veggies each day! Try and have veggies at every snack and meal. I add peppers, onion and garlic to my eggs, and top it off with salsa, rather than adding cheese. It's delicious. For mid-morning snacks, have some celery and raw almond butter for good staying power.
Reduce your sugar intake, eating it only once a day. Many of us consume sugar throughout the day, without even realizing it. We have a little in our coffee, along with say, Raisin Bran for breakfast. Then for lunch will have a soda or energy drink, and so on. Plus, sugar is added to most of the prepared foods we eat - so just try and eat whole foods as much as possible, limiting sugar to no more than 50 grams a day..
Try a 3 day juice fast! If you really need a boost to get your weight loss started, simply borrow a juicer from a friend, and drink veggie juice for 3 days. I guarantee you'll feel lighter by the end of it, plus you'll better appreciate the healthy, simple foods when you complete the fast. (It's a good idea to check with your doc before juicing or starting any weight loss plan.)
Spice up your life! It's a proven fact. Unless you have a particular disorder, flavorful and spicy foods are good for most people. As long as it agrees with you, eat lots of peppers, onions, garlic, leeks, cayenne pepper, red pepper, jalepeno and more. Statistics show that spicy foods keep your metabolism running higher for up to 3 hours after eating.
Eat more often. Athletes have been doing this for decades. Eat smaller meals or snacks, 5-6 times a day. This helps avoid massive insulin spikes, which put the body into fat storage mode.
Replace most breads with lentils or other beans. Lentils and other beans are a slower carb, so they give your body the carbohydrates it wants, without the fat storage that traditional breads encourage. Plus, most bread has sugar added to it, anyway. Sprouted grain breads are a better choice, if you really want bread.Eat healthy fats, and lean proteins. Try and minimize drinking milk, and instead eat a little lowfat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, eggs and chicken cooked in olive, coconut or macadamia nut oil.

There you have it. Follow these steps for healthy ways to lose weight fast and you should see noticeable results within a few weeks. And remember, visualize your positive outcome, seeing yourself lean and happy - you'll be more successful this way, and enjoy the process, too. I wish you success in your weight loss goals!

Benefits of Juicer Drinks and Smoothie Drinks

The benefits of juicer recipes and smoothie recipes are numerous. One main reason why juicing and drinking smoothies is so important is because both are filled with liquids like water. Our bodies need water to survive and thrive and so few people actually get enough water every day. Rarely will someone sit down and eat several carrots, celery, apples, oranges, and yogurt. If we combine all of them in a delicious smoothie, the body gets the liquids, the vitamins, and the minerals that the body needs.

Veggies and fruits contain essential nutrients that the body needs like vitamin C and A and beta carotene. Fruits are the number one source for minerals like magnesium, iron, iodine, sodium, copper, and potassium. These nutrients are essential for the body to function the way it needs to. When a fruit is consumed in the traditional way of eating it, the food has to go thru the traditional digestion cycle. When the fruit is juiced, the body is able to absorb and use the juice so much more quickly. The act of juicing separates the juice from the fiber and pulp of the fruit. The fiber and pulp are good for the body, but the juice is best. The body can only get a small amount of the nutrients unless it is removed from the fiber and pulp.

There is something in the smoothie world known as green smoothies. Traditionally smoothies were made with fruit and yogurt and usually had a sweet taste to them. As the world started getting more in touch with their healthy side, more people started experimenting with smoothies. Green smoothies have different ingredients in them that give them the not so pretty color. One way smoothies benefit and help to improve health is by helping us lose weight. A smoothie usually has less calorie then traditional food and has a lot less fat. Because smoothies are made from natural ingredients, the preservatives are way down also. Instead of reaching for a hamburger at a drive through, someone can whip up a smoothie with very little time and effort involved.

If you are like me, you crave sugar all the time. It is a daily battle with myself to not go to the vending machine and get a snickers. I don't even realize all of the sugar I am putting in my body. It starts with my coffee and even at lunch I get sugar in my salad dressing. The green smoothies help reduce the cravings the body has for the sugar and fat.

America - You Are Fat and You Need To Lose Some Weight

My wife and I were at a family reunion and one of my elderly aunts, (she's ninety years old and looks great), saw me from the distance. I walked up to her to say hello and the first thing that came out of her mouth was, "Brian, your fat". Well I was left for a loss for words; I mean what you say to someone who has just announced to you and anyone who is standing nearby, that you're fat. I just said thank you and walked away. My wife felt bad for me, but you know what...she was right.

I am about forty to forty-five pounds overweight and that puts me in the obese category. Obese...me. I never thought that I would be saying that. I'm 5 foot eight inches tall and weigh about 210 pounds. That makes me obese. Take the test for yourself.

It is especially surprising to me because I have always been athletic and played sports. I would train and discipline myself so that I could compete at the level I wanted too.

When my aunt said that she was shooting an arrow right in my heart, but it was something that I needed to hear. She woke me up to see the truth as to what I had become.

I don't know how many of you watch the TV series, "The Biggest Loser", but the past series had Olympic Gold Medal Winner, Rulon Gardner on it.

In the year 2000, Rulon Gardner won the Olympic gold medal as a 286-pound class wrestler. Over ten years later, he weighs in at 474 pounds. That's almost a 200 pound weight gain. When I saw him on the program, I didn't even recognize him.

How do you go from Olympic gold medal winner, a star and the talk of the town, to weighing in at almost 500 pounds. The same way I put on my weight and the same way you put on yours. We eat to much and don't get of off our derriere enough to exercise some of those calories away.

A few years back, my wife started a diet called the "Prism Diet". With it she lost about 45 pounds and I lost about 15, just eating what she put in front of me. It worked great but it was a lot of work.

You had to measure and weigh everything, and you had to buy certain vegetables, and it was a major effort to get dinner on the table. That was too much work for me.

Whether you want to admit it or not, food, weight gain, looking and feeling good, are very emotional things to all of us. Some more than others, but it touches all of us right in the emotional heart.

Rulon Gardner, after his first weigh in on "The Biggest Loser", gave a very emotional and apologetic statement to everyone. He said, "Being an athlete and winning the Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling to... World Champion... to Olympic Bronze medal to... to this... is a shame, its tragedy. It's horrifying for me and my family." That's touching the emotions.

My wife, after losing all that weight, saw her mom die of pancreatic cancer. It was a long and slow process that took a lot out of her, and because she has said herself, "I am an emotional eater", she gained it all back and more.

We have found something that is working for thousands of other people, and we are going to get on it and have it work for us. It's called, "The 90 Day Challenge".

This is the first of a series of articles, about our walk through "The 90 Day Challenge", that I will be writing. Follow this series and see pictures and weigh-ins to see how much and how we do with our challenge.

This is going to be challenging and fun and I am excited about doing this with my wife, a few of our friends and family members as well.

What do you have to lose but some weight, but think about what you will gain?

Here's to your health.

The Prasouda diet is known to be the backbone of every dieter's techniques, so what exactly are usually the points to learn about this particular diet program? Firstly, those on a diet who follow this course will likely consume food items lower in cholesterol. Because of this, the users on this diet have minimized probabilities of having cardiovascular ailments. Regardless of the the recipe is, every Mediterranean diet is comprised of whole meal plans, oily seafood, eggs, red wine, nuts, lean meats, virgin olive oil, vegetables, and fresh fruits. The subsequent and last part of the whole weight reduction program is exercising. A full Mediterranean regimen wouldn't be complete without it. Out of all of these, the most important one is the aerobic physical exercise which is the most effective because it works well for avoiding heart ailments. This may include things like minimal intensity routines that range from 15 minutes to 2 hours. The length of the physical exercise is the thing that makes a difference and not the intensity, because the long duration of sports activities will enhance the speed of extra fat metabolism.

The next phase here is deciding on the best sport. Usually, the best option here is a sport that requires extended action without having a risk for fast physical weakness. Walking, running, swimming, riding a bike and jogging are a couple of examples which may be integrated. So long as the action is engaging, the ultimate way to complete physical exercises would be to like it. This may be accomplished by incorporating audio to the regimen or doing it with friends making it rewarding, since the lengthy duration of the program would seem unexciting. Lastly, exercise periods have to be organized. The focus of this physical exercise system is to begin low and gradual, and then progressively accomplish the entire plan out to enhance the endurance of a person to physical activity.

One more element to finish the whole process on how to lose weight will not totally depend on exercise or any type of diet, but on one's individual self-discipline to continue the complete weight reduction plan. Home-Brewing Healthy Soup Recipes: Better Than The Canned Alternative

Soup is really great for a number of reasons. It is delicious and nutritious as well as being easy to make and doable with perfectly ordinary ingredients. Many kinds of soup also have real health benefits, and can work quite well in lessening the severity of cold and flu symptoms, among others. There are also real benefits to be had in making the soup yourself rather than relying on canned soups. In this article we will explore what soup is good for and why, along with considerations of different kinds of healthy soup recipes and the benefits of home brewing.

The Trouble With Canned Soup

When you consider all of the mass-produced, over-processed packaged food, you can find on supermarket shelves today, it might seem like overkill to put a similar blame on canned soup. Surely, soup is still good even when canned. Well, although canned soup is hardly the worthless junk found in many plastic or metal containers, it is still not as good for you as when made from home ingredients. The canning process and the excessive additives and preservatives used can sap much of what is great about soup out of its recipe and leave you with a relatively unhealthy brew.

Home-Brewing

Gathering the ingredients yourself and putting together your own soup recipes is certainly bound to be healthier than buying pre-made soup off the shelf, and you will almost certainly find that it does not really take much more effort. By foregoing the damaging processing used in commercial soups you can retain more of the essential nutrients in the soup recipe and, on top of everything else, you can enjoy the process of making the soup yourself. The feeling of having actually made the soup that you are currently having is almost as good as the soup itself!

Healthy Soup Recipes

There is an endless variety of healthy soup recipes out there. Everyone is familiar with that old favorite, chicken soup. However, you do not have to use chicken, and even vegetarians can find a great selection of soup recipes online easily enough. What you are really looking for in any homemade recipe is a good selection of vegetables. Onion and garlic are great additions to any soup and can bring out much of that healthy, cleansing feeling that helps dislodge unpleasant flu symptoms. There are whole websites dedicated to suitable recipes, and you should have no trouble finding one you really like.

Conclusion

Healthy soup recipes are not hard to come by and are some of the best options available to you for a quick meal. Preparing soup yourself is enjoyable and rewarding and allows you to tailor the ingredients exactly as you like them. You get a lot of nutritious benefits from making soup yourself that are lost when using canned soup off the shelf. It is always worth making a little extra soup, since many of the recipes you will find are so delicious and aromatic that you are likely to have anyone else living in your household clamoring for a serving of their own!

Sweet Afternoon Made Healthier With Low Carb Bread Pudding and Other Snacks

You start the day with a well balanced, healthy breakfast and follow it with a nutritious lunch, happy to be eating right and feeling great thanks to it. But by the late afternoon you're done waiting for dinner and you reach for a quick desert, telling yourself that a couple of pieces of chocolate or a cookie won't do any harm. Unfortunately more often than not it doesn't end on just two little pieces of dark chocolate or one oatmeal cookie, and what was supposed to be a little snack before a healthy dinner turns into a whole sweet meal in itself. A sweet dinner every once in a while is not bad, it will help with your cravings, as long as you skip the bag of mini chocolate candy bars or a batch of rich brownies and go for treats that are better for you.

For a warm and fruity dessert in place for dinner try some delicious bread pudding. However, make it with low carb bread, add rich spices like ground ginger, cinnamon and real vanilla, mix in your favorite fruit, like apples, cranberries or raisins. When serving, stop short of pouring rich sauce on it or decorating it with heaps of whipped cream, and instead sprinkle a dash of spices and maybe drizzle just a bit of real maple syrup or honey on top. If you eat your bread pudding still warm, the richness of the flavor and the different textures will make it so tasty in and of itself that you won't be missing any calorie rich additions.

If you like the idea of a warm and fruity dessert but are not too fond of it being bread or dough based, your best bet is to light up your grill. Stick your favorite fruit cut up into chunks onto skewers and place on the grill, or if you don't have one, on a cast iron pan or in the oven and keep it just long enough to get the grill marks. Fruit prepared this way will taste great, and you can bring more flavor out by adding some nutty spices and serving it with fresh mint leaves on top. For a more filling dish prepare a yogurt dip using a thick, Greek, natural yogurt and mixing it with spices, honey or just the softened fruit.

Some people like their snack soft and gooey, others prefer a bit of crunch. If you like to bite into something crispy, consider making pita bread chips by cutting your pita into triangles and tossing it in the oven or skillet until they harden, and preparing a selection of delicious dips to go with them. A smooth fruit and yogurt dip, a thick guacamole on a sweet side, home made peanut or almond butter, spicy apple sauce or a banana cream cheese are just some of the dips that will go great with your chips, and the great thing is that if you have any left over, you can always grab them the next day for lunch.

Chocolate, candy, cookies, ice cream and all kinds of other sweets are delicious, but if eaten too often they can lead to weight and health issues. That's why if you do have a sweet tooth, turning to more health conscious sweet snacks is a must, and if you let your imagination run wild, those good for you snacks will be as delicious as they are sweet.

What You Need to Know About the Gastric Band Procedure

Weight loss surgeries are becoming more popular as more people are suffering from obesity. For some people, it is the answer to all their weight problems. They want to under go surgery to help them get a head start in losing those excess pounds. Gastric band procedure is arguably the most popular weight loss surgery. It is a modern way to lose weight and it is thought to be the safest weight loss surgery. A lot of patients who had undergone the surgery were very happy with the results.

Gastric Band Preparations

Like any surgery, the patient still needs to be cleared for surgery. The first that a doctor will do is to get a detailed patient health history. It is important in determining if the patient is fit for surgery. Blood will also be drawn for various blood tests. The patient also needs to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 35-40 to be qualified for the surgery. Preparations will also include the doctor explaining to the patient about the surgery. The patient also needs to give his/her consent to have surgery. Getting an informed consent for the surgery is a must and it must be done by the doctor.

Gastric band preparations also include post-surgery diet and lifestyle changes. The patient needs to be aware of the various changes he/she has to make after the surgery. This is to help the patient decide if he/she really wants the surgery. The patient must also be psychologically prepared for the changes in his/her life. Some patients think that if they have the surgery, they will automatically lose weight. The truth is that they still need to follow a certain diet and they still need to watch what they eat.

What is the Gastric Band Procedure?

The procedure is pretty simple and it will take about 2-4 hours. The surgeon will make several incisions and a laparoscope will be inserted in one of them. The laparoscope is attached to a monitor so that the surgeon can view what's inside the patient's body. A band is then placed on the upper part of the stomach. That will decrease the size of the stomach. If the stomach's size is decreased, the patient will feel fuller after eating lesser food compared to what they ate in the past. It is a modern surgery, so the incisions are smaller and healing time is faster.

The procedure has been tried and tested by many patients. A lot of them have been satisfied with the results. They had lost weight due to the surgery. The gastric band procedure has changed their way of living. It is also great as it is totally reversible. The band can be removed if the patient does not like the result. This makes the gastric band procedure stand above other weight loss surgeries.

If you are thinking of having the surgery, then you should first consult your doctor. Find out if you qualify and get as much information as you can.

Skipping Meals Isn't a Good Weight Loss Strategy

Dietitians would all agree that skipping a meal wouldn't be the brightest weight loss strategy. Your first question is why? It is weight reducing you're going for, here, after all. It's easy to think that not eating is the best counter for overeating. Sadly, it isn't so. Rather, moderation is the key to losing weight.

Ineffective Weight Loss Strategy

Many dieters concur that if you refrain from eating greasy foods, you'll be able to quickly reduce weight. Many more seriously believe that if you eat even less, then your weight reduce plans will progress quicker. Driving the motivation over the top, there are those who do fervently believe that not eating at all could be the answer. The word that would best describe this scenario is "tragic." You must realize that reducing weight is an act of discipline and must be carried out in moderation.

A Realistic Weight Loss Scenario

The problem starts when you start wondering if you're gaining too much weight, and if you're neglecting your health somehow. Hold up in the busy schedule of work, in between spending time with friends and family, it's really hard to find the time to pay attention to your diet. The frustration builds up all the while your fatty tissues clump up under your skin. Before you know it, you've become overweight. Then you start feeling depressed because you still don't have the time to do some exercise and burn those extra fats. Tired and weary, you search for a solution. And what do you find? The magic solution: Skip meals! At least at first it seems like a magic solution. In some perverse way of thinking, it does make sense. You don't have the time to burn extra calories, so probably it wouldn't hurt not to take any calories at all.

You start skipping meals, not knowing all the grave consequences that entails. Be reminded once again that moderation is the key to having an effective weight loss strategy. Skipping meals and going absolute zero with your calories intake isn't a weight loss magic solution. Look at the following consequence of skipping meals and you'll realize the truth of this.

Result: Weight Gain and not Weight Loss

As surprising as it sounds, the major consequence of skipping meals is not reducing weight, but gaining weight. That's the complete opposite of what you're trying to achieve with engaging in a weight reducing program. Still can't believe it? Here's why: When you decide to skip meals, your body reacts to recompense the lack of supplement by slowing your metabolism. Not by weight loss. Slowing metabolism allows your body to conserve energy, supposing that you won't have food for a long time. Your mind, in turn, becomes desperate with hunger. The two of these factors combined, it will be too easy to overeat later, at the next meal. Since your metabolism is already in a slow pace, it won't have the time to adjust back to normal, meaning you will have eaten too much food while your body uses very little energy. In the end, you gain more weight.

Low Calorie Snack Review – Chobani Pomegranate Greek Yogurt

With so few calories, immense creaminess and fantastic?nutritional?benefits, why is Chobani’s Pomegranate Greek Yogurt my favorite? The amazing taste and ultra-satisfying texture.

I tried this yogurt a few weeks ago after noticing them on sale for $1 each. I typically only eat plain Greek yogurt and mix in berries and sometimes honey, but the pomegranate flavor (fruit on the bottom) enticed me. I bought two 6 oz individual serving containers and they only lasted two days.

Chobani’s Pomegranate Greek Yogurt tastes like the ultimate indulgence, but is absolutely not.

The breakdown:

Calories: 140Total fat: 0Cholesterol: 0Total carbohydrate: 21gSugar: 19gProtein 14gCalcium: 15% (DV)Gluten free and kosher, according to chobani.com

I remember the days of trying to convince myself that I loved those 60 to 80 calorie sugar-free low cal yogurts, but no thanks. The extra 60 calories is totally worth it to me.While I’m not a fan of so much sugar, I can justify it with this lovely little snack or dessert. At 140 calories, it’s a great value for your daily calorie budget. Even more impressive is that this yogurt is fat free, yet it is incredibly creamy. Lastly, I work out like crazy and the impressive 14g of protein is super helpful to recover sore and aching muscles after workouts!

I’ve gotten into the habit of eating one 6 oz container at night time which is a satisfying way to end my 1500 calorie days. I’ve tried all the other flavors at this point, but pomegranate is by far my favorite. Raspberry, blueberry and peach, are also fantastic.

If you haven’t tried Chobani’s pomegranate Greek yogurt yet, I whole heartedly recommend giving it a try. It’s by far, my absolute favorite low calorie snack or dessert. Your taste buds and your waist line will love you for it!

What is your favorite flavor of greek yogurt?

Guide To Creating Healthy Breakfast Recipes

Making breakfast a priority can help improve personal vitality. Choosing the wrong foods to fuel the body with can affect performance all day. Eating an unhealthy breakfast can cause weight gain or excessive hunger before lunch. Ravenous bouts of hunger mid morning can cause consumption of snack foods or eating an exceptionally large lunch. Giving into these cravings can cause problems maintaining a sensible weight. Healthy breakfast recipes can be the key to achieving and then maintaining a healthy weight.

Choosing to have a healthier lifestyle is usually based on being willing to change something with your habits. Eating is an action that is done several times a day for nourishment. Many people have become disillusioned with which foods are actually providing the nutrients they need, and those that just fill the stomach. Eating nutrient dense foods such as fast foods and highly processed foods can create a situation where the stomach is full, but the body does not have any real protein, fats, or antioxidants. The food that is eaten must be hearty enough to last until the lunch. Eating large amounts of meats throughout in the morning slows the body down. The denseness of the meat that is devoid in fiber each day can slow down the frequency of elimination. This may create a feeling of sluggishness, tiredness, and painful constipation.

Hot cereals, quick breads, pancakes, rolls, and waffles should be made of whole grains. Try healthy breakfast recipes that contain whole grain ingredients. White flour products should be omitted from a healthy diet. The white flour is when grain has the fiber milled out. The factory then sells the whole grain to buyers who are more concerned about their health. The whole grain products may cost more, but the food itself has fiber and nutrients that are not synthetic. Finding whole grain versions of basic breakfast basics is a way to make health changes that are easily acceptable when preparing foods by families.

Smoothies are a great way to have multiple servings of fruits and vegetables at once. Green smoothies incorporate more leafy greens than fruit. Juicing is a great way to heal the body each day, research recipes that help any personal ailment. Examples are helping with diabetes, weight loss, improving regularity, or to help clear skin problems. Look for recipes that incorporate favorite flavors and textures.

Find ways to lighten the recipe ingredients when baking or cooking breakfast. Instead of whole milk consider skim, vanilla soy milk, or almond milk in coffee and in baked goods. It is easy to ignore or not acknowledge how the power of our choices can affect our quality of life. Choosing to eat healthy foods can improve the chances of living a long life. Foods that work with the body instead of clogging arteries and the colon are easy to incorporate into breakfast. Eating raw fruits and vegetables are a way to cleanse the body each morning. Choose high fiber and foods with high water content within healthy breakfast recipes.

Low Calorie Chicken Casserole Recipe

?Casserole recipes are recipes that are usually referred to a one-dish meal that basically contain cooked meats, fish, poultry, eggs and vegetables and bound with soup or sauce. They are actually cooked using the casserole dish thus where the name came from. This cooking method became very popular especially among the Americans during the 1950's thereon when the dish was first introduced to the consumers from a simple light-weight metal. Now it has evolved into different materials such as glass, enamel, and stoneware to name a few. With this development, recipes of so many variations came up for everyone's satisfaction.

Varieties of low calorie recipes were introduced depending on every persons requirement. The usual low calorie intake per day consists of 1500 to 1800 kcal. Normally, calorie intake varies, 1940 kcal for women and 2550 kcal for men. These calories are then burned into energy and the excess intake become fat. There are considerable factors that affects the daily calorie needs of a person. These are age, weight, height, the composition of the body and the daily activity. Low- calorie diet should always be upon the doctor's recommendation. Regular food are usually eliminated and a meal replacement is recommended. This is why there are recipes now that are low in calories but are regular sight in our dining table especially for health conscious family. One casserole recipe that I usually prepare for my family is the low- calorie Chicken Casserole, Filipino way.

Low Calorie Chicken Casserole

Ingredients:

1.5 lbs chicken breast (skinless), diced2 medium size potatoes, diced2 medium size carrots, diced1 medium size turnip, diced1 each green and red bell pepper, chopped1 large onion, chopped4 cloves garlic, crusheda?? cup tomato paste1 tbsp parsley, chopped1 tbsp paprika1 bay leaf1 liter chicken stock4 tbsp olive oilsalt and pepper to taste

Procedure:

In a mixing bowl or dish, mix all together the chicken, paprika, salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in a casserole or a large sauce pan and place the seasoned chicken. Cook for 5-10 minutes until chicken turned brown. Remove chicken and set aside. Saute onion and garlic on the same casserole until the onions are translucent. Add the chopped green pepper and parsley then the tomato paste. Mix well and cook for 3 to 4 minutes more.

Return the chicken to the casserole. Gradually add the chicken stock. Add all the vegetables and stir them all together and cook over a low heat for about 20 minutes or until chicken and vegetables are done. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately with plain rice.

Makes 5 - 6 servings

Every 100 grams of chicken breast is equivalent to 116 kcal. This casserole recipe have 700 grams chicken breast and therefore has 812 kcal. Taking into account the added vegetables, it is still in conformity with a low calorie diet which is supposed to be 1500 -1800 calories per day depending on a person's needs and doctor's advice.

Mexican Meals For Dieters - Making Good Choices

By planning ahead and being aware of what is healthy and what is not, you can enjoy all your favorite traditional Mexican foods without having to go hungry or feel like you are missing out. Whether you are thinking about making a Mexican food recipe at home or ordering at a restaurant, a little background knowledge about low fat and low calorie choices can mean the difference between a healthy meal and an unhealthy one.

For many people, their idea of authentic Mexican food recipes would be deep fried tortillas filled with meat, cream, and lots of cheese, tortilla chips, guacamole, and creamy dips. If you were to visit Mexico, you might be surprised about what the locals actually eat. If they were to eat what some westerners think they do, they would all be obese!

Traditional Mexican Foods

A lot of the meals do contain cheese and some contain cream or are deep fried, but Mexico's diet is more versatile and varied than some people give it credit for. We might go to a restaurant and order fried items with creamy dressings and then a rich chocolate dessert. A Mexican meal is more likely to consist of meat, chicken or fish with a selection of fresh vegetables, fresh herbs, and a tomato-based sauce or some kind of dressing.

Tortillas feature on the Mexican table at most meals but they are not the deep-fried, bright yellow, U-shaped ones you get at fast food joints; rather they are simple flour or corn ones, which can be eaten as a meal accompaniment, used to scoop up soup or stew or filled with chicken, meat, vegetables, cheese or eggs and enjoyed like that.

Western restaurants cater for the western palate. Most Chinese restaurants use a lot of sugar in their entrees, to make them more palatable to westerners, who find it hard to believe that the typical Chinese diet is rather plain in comparison.

A simple mixture of rice, fish or meat and vegetables is the daily diet in many Asian homes. So why do people not realize that Mexican food is not what you get at junk food restaurants, Tex-Mex restaurants or most non-authentic south of the border eateries?

Healthy South Of The Border Choices

The truth about traditional south of the border meals is that they are generally quite healthy. Take Mexican stew or casserole, for example. This would be a combination of beef, pork, or chicken with all your favorite vegetables and a mouthwatering sauce made with chilies, tomatoes, garlic, fresh cilantro or parsley, lime juice and cumin.

The aromatic flavors work well with the meat and vegetables and because this is so healthy, you can balance it out with some grated cheese on top or sour cream on the side. Such a meal would be more filling and tasty than a greasy, deep fried dish which is slathered in molten cheese.

By all means, you can order sour cream or guacamole on the side, or sprinkle some cheese over your food, if you select a nutritious entree. Choose a soup or salad for your appetizer and a fruit-based dessert and your whole meal can be nutritious yet very filling and enjoyable. You do not have to deprive yourself altogether of the tasty dips or creamy side dishes if you choose your meal wisely.

Mexican food is healthier than a lot of people realize. You can use fresh vegetables to make Mexican soups, stews or even a fresh salsa recipe and you can use chicken, beef or your favorite meat to make satisfying and delicious authentic south of the border meals.

Eat for Energy - 6 Foods That Give You Energy and Are Good for Weight Loss!

The secret is out: the food can be your best friend to lose weight. Whether you need to burn fat, or simply relax and energize your body, your food may help.
There are many good foods for weight loss, plus some of them also help you raise your energy levels.

Why Eat for Energy?

Energy is essential for everyday life. It's how we cook a meal, send an email or smile at someone attractive at a bar. To keep us energized throughout these busy days, we need food to lose weight that will also act as an energy booster. Good foods for losing weight that give you energy help you stay productive all day.

Energy is essential and as food is our energy, this is the number one reason why diets with severe caloric restriction are very difficult to follow.

Nuts

There are 3 wonderful things you have to memorize in relation to nuts:

‧ Protein and fat will help satisfy hunger
‧ Nuts help you to boost libido (yes, that libido)
‧ The nuts give you energy!

Nuts are full of good things like calcium, fiber, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc to name a few.

They are practically a multivitamin themselves, nuts are good foods for weight loss that will boost your energy levels without increasing the amount of calories and fat.

Good fats are in nuts help you feel good also makes you feel satisfied due to the protein and gives you the energy to not feel lethargic at the end of the day, which cannot be said of caffeine or sugar. Eat a handful of raw nuts daily to get more energy and nutrients.

Almonds are the best, but pick your favorite and eat when you snack.

Salmon

Being a great source of protein, salmon is already a good food to lose weight. It's a great fish to eat for energy too.

The best thing is that you can eat salmon in many ways.

You can take a steak and cook on the grill, make a sushi roll or just make some eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast. With so many ways to boost your energy levels, salmon is a superfood to lose weight and have more energy.

Grapefruit

It's no secret that grapefruit is a good food to lose weight and have more energy. However, there is a reason for this obsession. Grapefruits are good foods to lose weight because of its fiber and pectin. It is a fat burning food.

Grapefruits are good foods to lose weight because they give you energy: to digest them you need to use more calories than they give you... and that is the calorie deficit that makes you lose weight!

Whole Grain Bagel

When you need something that gives you the encouragement needed to get going in the morning, eat a whole grain bagel instead of a white bread. The whole grain bagels are good foods to lose weight because they are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, and help you lose weight because they require more energy to digest.

Spread with fruit jam to help follow a conservative account of calories every day.

Apricots

When you need a sweet snack without suffering the downturn of energy, looking for a nice apricot. Apricots give you energy, and unlike candy also give you nutrients. They are good foods to lose weight because they have fiber, which makes them excellent sources of energy. Apricots contain lycopene and vitamin B, long considered an aphrodisiac and a stimulator of energy...

Carrots

Carrots are good foods to lose weight because of its bright orange color and can help prevent many types of cancer. In addition, carrots are big promoters of energy because they are digested quickly in your bloodstream giving you an instant boost of energy!

In my opinion, carrots are one of the best foods to lose weight because they give you energy-- you can put a dozen of them in a bag and eat as a snack, as you need to eat for energy throughout the day.

Get a bag of baby carrots and have energy that lasts all day.

Successful weight loss requires you to think carefully about the food you put in your grocery cart and on your plate. Healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables are great for weight loss, plus it will help boost your energy, fight cancer and germs.

Common Diet Myths That You Must Be Aware Of

1. Not eating carbohydrates can make you lose weight fast. That is a myth. What makes you gain weight are the calories that you take in. You can eat a lot and watch the calories that the food contain. In this way, you can control your weight gain. The best thing is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid fast food menus and junk foods as well as sodas because they contain a high amount of calorie which can destroy your diet.

2. No need to diet if you don't look fat. What determines whether you are overweight or underweight is your BMI. You may not look fat but you can be overweight when you compute your BMI.

3. Don't mind what you eat as long as you exercise. To remain healthy, there must always be a balance in everything. The result of exercising will cancel out if you still do not mind what you are eating. Poor eating habits can lead to many diseases and later on, death.

4. Exercise hard to lose weight. Again, this is another myth. Simple brisk walking can already make you lose weight. When you exercise, make sure that you like it. You can simply set aside half an hour for your exercise.

5. Sore muscles mean that you did quite a workout. Again, this is not true. Feeling that you muscles are sore means that you had too much workout and probably started out the wrong way.

6. If you are a smoker, stopping an unhealthy lifestyle will make you gain weight. This is not a fact. Some people who stop smoking may or may not gain weight. There are also some people who lose weight when they stop smoking. Although nicotine can speed up metabolism, its effect is actually minimal.

7. Low-fat and fat-free food can make you lose weight. These labels on food products does not mean that the food is free from calorie. If you want to really lose some weight, you should check the amount of calories that you are taking.

These are just some of the diet myths that you may have encountered along the way. The best way to lose weight is still proper, healthy diet and exercise. It is not good to starve yourself just so you lose all that extra pounds. Following an unhealthy diet regimen will only cost you a lot of money and unnecessary expenses because you will get sick. If you want to shed off some of those pounds, do it the healthy way.

Weight and See - The Permanent Weight Loss Solution

Now I am not going to tell you that diets don't work - you already know that! How many diets have you tried over the years? How many times have you successfully failed at losing the weight for any length of time? You may well have lost some weight initially on a diet but probably put all the weight that you lost back on once the diet stopped or your will power caved in.

Diets fail because they are more about starvation and less about eating when you are hungry. They are more about not eating the food you want and more about denying yourself. I want you to NOT think about chocolate or cake - I bet you just did! You see in order to not think about something (forbidden food!) you have to first think about it - so no surprises that that chocolate it is on your mind!

Hypnotherapy has proven to be successful for long term weight loss in many research articles. Hypnotherapy will help you overcome your cravings (eating some of what you fancy as opposed to lots of what you crave); incorporate more healthy food options; help you notice when you are physically hungry (as opposed to emotionally hungry) and the comfortably full feeling you get when you have eaten enough for your body and to replace poor eating habits.

However whilst all of the above are crucial to successful weight loss - as with diets - just ensuring that you alter eating habits with hypnotherapy may not be sufficient to gain long term weight loss. You may need to resolve the underlying motivation behind your overeating first before you have long lasting weight loss success.

Motivational factors include eating when bored, lonely, sad or frustrated or some people eat as a reward or a punishment (usually at a subconscious level). No amount of food will make you feel better - it will make you feel worse though! Whatever the compelling force behind your overeating - until you uncover and resolve it - it will always be there.

Once the cause of your overeating has been resolved, you no longer feel compelled to overeat. Further hypnotherapy may still be required to ensure you break those unhealthy eating habits that you have created however you will notice that eating healthily becomes so much easier to do!

With the success of Gastric Band Hypnosis being in the media - many people now are turning to this alternative. Not only do they save thousands of pounds but they avoid all the risks associated with surgery yet you experience all the associated feelings experienced by those that have had the actual gastric band fitted, including the steady weight loss!

After the virtual surgery you will notice that you are unable to eat as much food as you did before - and as a result will begin to shed that excess weight whilst feeling comfortable full sooner.

To ensure long term results with the Gastric Band Hypnosis - ask to see if the motivation behind your overeating is resolved too. If you uncover and resolve the cause of your overeating you gain permanent results.

Muesli: What's Right, What's Wrong And Why It Matters

How do you decide which muesli breakfast cereal to choose for you and your family when there are only so many hours in a day? Here's what you need to know BEFORE you step foot in the breakfast cereal isle or you buy muesli online.

What's Right...

What's right with muesli is that it's a healthy breakfast cereal choice because it contains essential vitamins and minerals. Muesli is based on rolled oats which are an excellent source of thiamine, iron, and dietary fibre. Fibre is helpful in reducing cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.

Seeds like sunflower seeds which are an excellent source of dietary fibre, some amino acids (especially tryptophan.) Vitamin E, B Vitamins (especially vitamin B1 or thiamine, vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid and folate and pumpkin (pepita) seeds which are a great source of protein and mineral irons, as well as zinc, manganese, magnesium and potassium.

Also nuts like dates, which may be considered as an almost ideal food, providing a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health benefits. Dates are a very good source of dietary potassium when added to muesli.

What's Wrong...

What's wrong with some store bought muesli breakfast cereals is; ADDED SUGAR. Adding additional sugar in muesli is not necessary as your body doesn't need extra sugar to function at it's best.

Sugar has been referred to as poison. Refined sugar has a bad reputation for contributing to tooth decay, weight gain increasing the chances of developing diabetes and obesity. The other nasty side effects of sugar are; aging your skin, depressing your immune system and sugar is the preferred fuel of cancer cells.

Consider this... when buying breakfast cereals (or any other foods for that matter) normally listed under 'total carbohydrates' are the amount of sugar each product contains... check them out first before you buy.

And Why It Matters...

As the saying goes - "Garbage In, Garbage Out."

Strong words I know, but if you're serious about your health and nutrition it starts with what you put into your body to maximise your wellness and vitality.

As you're aware, some food groups have proven to be more beneficial over the long term for your health. Muesli is one such champion food that is tasty and easy to prepare for breakfast, lunch or dinner and more importantly, muesli is chock full of important vitamins and nutrients for your entire family.

Given its amazing potential for human health and great nutritional value, muesli, especially homemade muesli is a natural choice for a healthy lifestyle.

Gluten Free Pizza

Want gluten free pizza? Unfortunately gluten is found inside pizza dough. This causes pizza to be a very poor choice when trying to lose weight and trim up. The gluten mixed with the high amount of carbs and calories AND the cheese is not the best combination. But... pizza is delicious, isn't it? So how can we re-create pizza so it is a tad bit healthier for us? The answer: remove the gluten and switch to rice cheese!

Gluten Free Pizza does exist and it isn't difficult to make. With gluten-free dough, rice cheese and some healthy veggies for toppings, you can make a world of difference in the quality of your pizza! It will be much healthier!

Below I've included my recipe for a delicious, easy to make pizza with no additives!

Jenni's Pizza Crust

1 cup hot water and 1 pack yeast (place yeast pack in hot water till it becomes frothy. Water should be about 130 degrees)
3 Cups Pamela's baking mix
2 Tablespoons Whole Foods Pizza Spice, Italian Seasoning, OR Trader Joe's "21 Season Solute"
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon Agave

Mix all ingredients together in a big bowl except cheese and pepperoni. Kneed into a ball and use rolling pin to roll it out into pizza shape, about ?" thick. Remember, thin crust will cook FASTER. (You want this dough soft but not STICKY. If as you mix and kneed it sticks A LOT to your fingers, add more Gluten-Free flour.)

Place dough on a greased (use Ghee) cookie sheet and place in preheated oven for 15 minutes, Remove from oven, add sauce and toppings. Bake for 10-15 minutes until crust is golden on edges and cheese is melted. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Here a Waddle, There a Waddle Everywhere a Waddle Waddle

There has always been an element of humor associated with fat people albeit often cruel and thoughtless. However some have made their living out of their overweightness. Old troupers like Oliver Hardy and Lou Costello and more recently John Hardy, Gabriel Inglesias and John Belushi.

Dr Anna Peeters, of the Netherlands Morbidity Research Unit, who led a study, said: "We concluded that obesity in adulthood is associated with a decrease in life expectancy of about seven years, both in men and women". It is not just the few years that you might lose, but the quality of life during the time you waddle around. Think of how restricted life can be. Walking the dog can cause extreme breathlessness, most sports are out. Too embarrassed to go to the beach or a restaurant. Traveling by bus or plane can be a nightmare. Tying your shoe laces, forget it. If you have a fall imagine the humiliation of having six people to help you up.

To improve your health and lose some weight is not impossible, difficult perhaps, but not impossible. The first step is to look at your lifestyle then make some changes. They do not have to be dramatic to start with, a small step is better than none. Walk a little, limit the amount of fast food you eat during the week would be a start.

Obesity has now become a world wide phenomenon with up to 300mil+ suffering obesity according to the World Health Organization's last figures and many times that are classified as over weight. It is no longer a Western civilization problem now some Asian countries are expanding sideways, so to speak. These figures are way out of date, the numbers are increasing.

Children are not immune from this malaise. The percentage of overweight children between 6-11 has nearly doubled since the early 1980's. This can not be so surprising when certain lifestyle factors are considered. More time spent in front on a computer screen on the internet. They can even play some sports by standing in their lounge rooms in front of the TV instead of engaging in the activity outside.

But the worst contributor surely has to be the proliferation of fast food outlets pedaling their salt/fat/sugar products. These are advertised every where particularly on TV when children are watching. Have you noticed now that the products themselves have got fatter. We are now encouraged to go 'SUPERSIZED'.

It is no wonder that some social scientists have predicted that the current generation of children will be the first in history, collectedly, not to live as long as their parents. A sobering thought.

According to the US Census 2000; estimates). Six million American adults are now morbidly obese Body Mass Index 40+), with another 9.6 million have a Body Mass Index of 35-40. these figures are almost twice as high as 1980. And this was in 2000, what of today?

When I was growing up overweight people were a real minority with children almost non- existent. I remember only one or two in the whole school. Wander through any shopping center/mall and see how society has ballooned. Where do you fit in? You can make a difference if you want to.
